Michael Carnevale, 27, gave the ultimate "Gift of Life" when he died on October 31 1999 as a result of injuries sustained during an auto accident.
Just two weeks prior, while traveling to a family funeral, he had an end-of-life discussion with his mother that included his wish to become a donor if he should die. His family was able to follow through with that decision with the healthcare team from Westchester Medical Center and the New York Organ Donor Network. Michael was able to donate his liver, pancreas, both kidneys and tissue to his recipients.
The MCF is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization established in 1999 by Michael's parents, Jean and Bob Carnevale. The foundation is dedicated to increasing public and professional awareness about organ and tissue donation through various educational and media projects.
Currently, the MCF is working with their project partners and advisory committee on the development of a CD-ROM that will be a CME program for physicians about organ and tissue donation. Various public education media campaigns are also in progress.
